Fascinating Facts about the Clitoris

We’d like to bring you some Fascinating Facts about natures best invention – the Clitoris!

  • The clitoris is the only organ in the human species designed purely for sexual pleasure (aren’t we lucky girls!)
  • The word clitoris is thought to come from the Greek for hill or slope or key, not “button” as one might think
  • The love button is not actually a button at all, but more of a network of sensitive erectile tissues. All parts of the clitoris swell with blood and become firm and aroused during sexual excitement
  • The clitoris contains 8,000 nerve fibres
  • Three-quarters of the actual clitoral size is hidden from view because it is under the skin. The size of the body of the average clitoris (including shaft and glans) is 1 to 1½ inches (2 to 4 centimetres) in length. In a few women it has been known to be as large as 2½ inches (6 cm) in length and almost 1 inch (2 cm) in diameter. When a clit is this size, it can be as big as an average sized penis – and can grow even bigger on erection, demonstrating the remarkable similarity in tissue between the penile glans and clitoris
  • Girls get hard-ons! Because all the parts of the clitoris are composed of erectile tissue they become engorged with blood during arousal just as the penis does. In many women the clitoral glans can become noticeably erect, increasing in size or just becoming harder
